THIRTY YEARS OF LIVE STAND-UP COMEDY 1996-2026:
STARTING OUT: In 2026 I am celebrating thirty years of performing Live Stand-Up Comedy. My first ever stand-up performance was at The Funny Bone in Urbandale, Iowa in July of 1996. However, I had been writing jokes since I was 12 years old. I would ride the city bus from middle school down to my local comedy club (Penguins Comedy Club), and I would ask them if I could get some time on stage. Being so young the managers there never took me seriously, telling me I wasn’t even old enough to be in the club. It was at this time that I started writing jokes. My thinking was by the time I turned 18 I would have material to perform. Once I turned 18, I went back to Penguins, I asked them again if I could perform. They again had no time for such a young person. Over the next few months, I would continue to stop in hoping that one day they would allow me to perform. On one particular visit they told me to come back after the first of November, and they would allow me to go on stage. While November, at the time was still four months away I prepared my material and came back on November 2nd. I asked them again when I could go on. They were confused, but I had reminded them they told me last time I could go on after the first of November. They shook their head and said “Sorry, you must have misunderstood us. We said come back after the first of never.” I was dejected! They, however, could sense my sadness and decided then and there to set-up their first Open-Mic comedy show, of which I could take part. This was a big deal because this was my hometown and I was finally going to get to perform comedy there. Like I had always dreamed of since I was a kid in school. Comedy Clubs did not have Open-Mic shows like they do nowadays. But more on that in my next paragraph.
